One of our most-loved pieces, the Butterfly Small Bites Tower was inspired by working with Chef Natalie Reeves on her gorgeous and delicate small bites. Designed to hold many small appetizers at once, the perforated steel mesh leaflets are tiny plates for your food to shine. Perfect for gatherings where bites can be lifted up from the table to truly stand out.

About Surprise Diet

I’m Emory Hall, first and foremost a chef. I used to work in restaurants and then went to art school, learned to weld and began to try to integrate the two halves of cooking and making art. I started to make custom tables and tabletop towers for parties, mostly all made of stainless steel. I weld in my studio in Lincoln Heights and also make a few other things, all centered around utility in forms of organic beauty. All of my welding work is self-taught and influenced by intuition, not machine-enhanced or seamless in nature. Wobbly forms, imperfect symmetry and bumpy texture inform the natural aesthetic. Vines, petals and other botanical forms allow for fairytale and ornate structures to hold delicate bites and prized produce.

I’m most inspired by chef friends and collaborators and what they cook for their clients or themselves. A long conversation with a fellow chef will often inspire the next steel piece and put into language a shared idea for how to serve food more elegantly.
